Twenty two years ago we designed and made the Reception Desk and surgery furniture for The White House Surgery Chipping Norton.
Two months ago we installed the Strata Reception Desk in the new Chipping Norton joint Health Centre, which now meets the needs of the growing town and surrounding villages.
Made in walnut with desktop lino surfaces, the desk has a feature design front panel made in walnut, oak, maple and ash stripes. The low desk section offers a welcome to wheelchair users and the whole desk is a central focal point as patients arrive and await care. The new building is full of light with rich colour walls and open spaces to wait and work in.
We worked in conjunction with Bilfinger GVA Architects and Pollard Developers to design, make and install the desk in good time and to suit their completion schedule.
This is a large furniture piece and required careful design and planning to make in suitable sections for delivery and site assembly, while maintaining a cohesive design on completion.
A large spacious room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking a bay in Cornwall is the picture I was shown. The brief was to create a sideboard with a coastal theme having texture and a weathered feel.
We struck on oak for the cabinet exploring texture options, settling on a wire-brushed treatment with a natural oiled finish. The drawer and doors in maple to contrast, with a smooth flat lustre, looking sun bleached in appearance. Feature recessed handles, picked out in a compass point design and backed with bog oak for definition, and planked door panels complete the details with a board walk association.
The Compass sideboard is all about creating a style that suits the location, with tactile touches adding to the effect. Quality details of brass hinges and close fitting dovetailed drawer have not been forgotten and add greatly to the pleasure of owning a well-considered furniture piece.
